Today is the day you will consider a new or different approach to getting what you deserve. Today, you are going to consider staffing agencies for the first time, or one last time.
Now, before you start rehashing your worst experience with a staffing agency…remember, different activities produce different results.
The details you are about to read contain nuggets – simple adjustments – to your approach. Read each step thoroughly because you want to catch the variance.
APPLY ONLINE OR CREATE A PROFILE FIRST
Pull up an Internet search of staffing agencies by city, for example, “staffing agencies Sacramento, CA”. A list of agencies will populate. Starting with the first on the list, visit the agency Website, and create a profile. If you do see a job posted in your field of interest, apply.
CALL THE AGENCY AFTER YOU’VE CREATED A PROFILE
State your first and last name and your “status”. In this case, you just completed an online profile, or applied for a position you qualify for. Ask to speak with a recruiter. Be prepared by having pen, paper, and your resume available. You want to make certain you catch the name of your recruiter and their agency. Also, you want to be careful about rambling, so having your resume handy is a powerful talking tool.
YOUR RECRUITER MAY ASK YOU TO SEND YOUR RESUME TO THEM DIRECTLY
When sending resumes by email, send the Word document rather than .pdf…we may need to tweak them or add the company logo. Remember; delete your physical address! City and State only.
PREPARE A “SIZZLE” STATEMENT FOR THE BODY OF YOUR EMAIL
Specify years of experience, professional interests, and personality traits that make you a great fit for said position. Be attentive to the questions asked over the phone. If your recruiter asks about skills not detailed on your resume, re-state those answers in your sizzle statement.
UNDERSTAND THE PROCESS
Assessment tests, background screening, and I-9’s are likely before you even get to interview. After all that, many people think they have landed a job, BUT…maybe not. The employment forms are a requirement to get candidates eligible to be paid by the agency. Even the “right to work” documents are part of the pre-screening process.
Taking the time to complete these compliance steps is equal to, or better use of your time applying to jobs posted on the Internet job boards. Agency recruiters can become your talent agent, like an actor’s agent, or a sports agent.
THIS IS A BIG ONE:
Know your recruiter’s name and check in weekly. If you do not connect on the first try, send an email. Most recruiters are passionate about providing opportunities, but you have NO idea how much they do each day. Your professional correspondence should include the last time you spoke, a reminder of your skills, and your resume attached. Yes, attach your resume unless you are asked to stop.
